It seems my oldest son has inherited my mostly fortunate gift of receiving Karma immediately after his lovely or not-so-lovely acts. I don’t generally walk around worrying that “it’s” coming someday but when?! Oh, it’ll happen. And it will happen pretty dang quickly.
So I picked up my darling 12-year-old from school yesterday and after getting settled into the car, with a big grin on his face, he asked me if one of his knees looked swollen compared to the other with a scratch on it. Yea, a little bit. What happened? “I fell down the stairs,” he tells me. Oh! Well, it seems you’re alright. Right? I mean, you’re grinning. How did you fall down the stairs?
His story was basically that he decided that he should tell a girl that his friend had a crush on her. The friend was not with him at the time, and the friend had not given him permission to share the news. My son saw her in the hall and went running after her (what was he thinking??), but something went awry. He acted out for me how he stumbled over himself, his books and bag went flying, his arms flew out next to him causing him to whack a different girl, and they both went tumbling down the stairs. I looked at him somewhat stunned for just a second before he told me that he jumped up and went over to the fallen girl and asked her if she was okay and offered to help her up. THAT’S my boy. She said she was fine and quickly left. Obviously, right? And did you gather your things and continue after the girl-crush to share your friend’s business? “No!” he exclaimed. “I thought the Universe really did not want me sharing his business, so I walked away.”
I’m pretty sure at that point my grin was bigger than his. Then I laughed out loud and told him I would have paid money to see that whole experience play out. He laughed and said it was hilarious. And not embarrassing at all!
He is such a cool kid.
